More than 7 million households across the United Kingdom are affected by the pervasive issue of moisture and mould. These damp conditions are notorious for releasing allergens, irritants, and mould spores, alongside a host of other hazardous substances that significantly compromise health. This environmental problem is not just a minor inconvenience; it poses serious health risks, leading to respiratory problems, allergies, and even more severe conditions like asthma. In an effort to combat these health challenges, the National Health Service (NHS) dedicates approximately £1.4 billion each year to tackle health problems associated with living in cold, damp, or mould-infested environments.
Recent advancements in construction methods have significantly enhanced the efficiency of heating and insulation in our homes. However, these improvements have also inadvertently created favorable conditions for dampness and mold to thrive. Studies indicate that approximately one-third of the UK population (29%, translating to 15.4 million individuals) frequently or occasionally encounters mold issues in their residences.

Join us for the UK’s inaugural Damp & Mould Action and Awareness Week thats making a comeback for its second year, offering even more tools, expert advice, and actionable solutions to address a significant housing and health challenge.
Building on the remarkable achievements of its first edition, it will be held again from October 20-26, continuing its mission to address the prevalent issue of damp and mould in homes across the nation. (get involved HERE)
This year’s initiative is particularly timely, as major reforms are poised to mandate landlords to repair hazardous homes or face serious legal repercussions.
Awaab’s Law, which takes effect in October, will obligate social landlords to promptly investigate and resolve damp and mould problems. Non-compliance will lead to legal accountability, empowering social tenants to demand safe and healthy living spaces.
This legislation, named in memory of two-year-old Awaab Ishak, who sadly passed away after being exposed to mould in his Rochdale residence, marks a crucial step towards improving the safety and quality of social housing in the UK.
Initiated by home safety experts Aico, the inaugural Damp & Mould Action and Awareness Week aimed to eradicate the persistent issue of dampness and mould. This initiative garnered extensive support from Members of Parliament, property owners, housing specialists, and advocacy organisations
