World Environment Day in 2025 will focus on the critical issue of eradicating plastic waste, with the Republic of Korea taking the lead in hosting this vital theme. For decades, plastic pollution has permeated every corner of our planet, infiltrating our oceans, rivers, and our Air. It has become a ubiquitous presence, tainting the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe, and accumulating in our own bodies. Despite this pervasive threat, plastic pollution stands as one of the most solvable environmental challenges we face today, thanks to a variety of straightforward solutions that have been identified and are ready to be implemented.
The impact of plastic pollution is staggering, with an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste entering our oceans annually, equivalent to dumping a garbage truck full of plastic into the sea every minute. This plastic debris not only harms marine life, often leading to the death of countless sea creatures who ingest or become entangled in it, but also disrupts entire ecosystems. Microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been found in the most remote parts of the world, including the deepest ocean trenches and the highest mountain peaks, highlighting the global scope of this issue.
Addressing plastic pollution involves a multifaceted approach, including reducing plastic production, enhancing recycling efforts, and developing alternatives to single-use plastics. Innovative solutions such as bioplastics, which are derived from renewable sources like corn starch, and reusable products offer promising avenues for reducing our reliance on traditional plastics. Additionally, international cooperation and policy initiatives, such as bans on single-use plastic items and the promotion of circular economies, are crucial in driving the necessary changes to combat this environmental crisis. By working together, we can significantly reduce plastic waste and protect our planet for future generations.
Our Goals
Crystal is at the forefront of efforts to reduce the reliance on plastic within the office environment and among our team of engineers. In a bid to create a more sustainable workplace, we are opting for alternatives such as cardboard and paper instead of plastics. This initiative not only aligns with global environmental goals but also reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. For example, we have replaced plastic water bottles with reusable containers and are using cardboard packaging for equipment and supplies.
We maintain a rigorous recycling routine that we are continually enhancing, do regular litter pick ups in the local area and are on schedule to meet our 2030 goal of going completely eco-friendly with 85% of our fleet already being electric.
